Evidence of an Initially Magnetically Dominated Outflow in Grb 080916c

چکیده
The composition of gamma-ray burst (GRB) ejecta is still a mystery. The standard model invokes an initially hot “fireball” composed of baryonic matter. Here we analyze the broad band spectra of GRB 080916C detected by the Fermi satellite. The featureless Band-spectrum of all five epochs as well as the detections of > ∼ 10 GeV photons in this burst place a strong constraint on the prompt emission radius Rγ , which is typically > ∼ 10 15 cm, independent on the details of the emission process. The lack of detection of a thermal component as predicted by the baryonic models strongly suggests that a significant fraction of the outflow energy is initially not in the “fireball” form, but is likely in a Poynting flux entrained with the baryonic matter. The ratio between the Poynting and baryonic fluxes is at least ∼ (15− 20) at the photosphere radius, if the Poynting flux is not directly converted to kinetic energy below the photosphere. Fermi Observations of high-energy gamma-ray emissions from GRB 080916C
Observations of the long-duration Gamma-Ray Burst GRB 080916C by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor and Large Area Telescope show that it has a single spectral form from 8 keV to 13.2 GeV. The E > 100 MeV emission was ≈ 5 s later than the E < ∼ 1 MeV emission and lasted much longer even after photons with E < 100 MeV became undetectable. The redshift from GROND of z ≈ 4.35 means that this GRB ha...
متن کاملPrompt Gev Emission from Residual Collisions in Gamma-ray Burst Outflows: Evidence from Fermi Observations of Grb 080916c
The γ-rays from γ-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be produced by internal shocks driven by small timescale, ∼ 1 ms, variation in the GRB outflows, and a pair-production spectral cutoff is generally expected around the GeV range. However, the observed optical flashes accompanying GRBs suggest that the delayed residual collisions due to large timescale variation continue to accelerate electrons...
متن کاملGrb 080916c: on the Radiation Origin of the Prompt Emission from Kev/mev to Gev
Fermi observations of high-energy gamma-ray emission from GRB 080916C shows that its spectrum is consistent with the Band function from MeV to tens of GeV. Assuming one single emission mechanism dominates in the whole energy range, we show that this spectrum is consistent with synchrotron origin by shockaccelerated electrons. The simple electron inverse-Compton model and the hadronic model are ...
متن کاملThe redshift and afterglow of the extremely energetic gamma-ray burst GRB 080916C
Context. The detection of GeV photons from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) has important consequences for the interpretation and modelling of these most-energetic cosmological explosions. The full exploitation of the high-energy measurements relies, however, on accurate knowledge of the distance to the events. Aims. Here we report on the discovery of the afterglow and subsequent redshift determination ...
متن کاملExpected high energy emission from GRB 080319B and origins of the GeV emission of GRBs 080514B, 080916C and 081024B
We calculate the high energy (sub-GeV to TeV) prompt and afterglow emission of GRB 080319B that was distinguished by a naked-eye optical flash and by an unusual strong early X-ray afterglow. There are three possible sources for high energy emission: the prompt optical and γ-ray photons IC scattered by the internal shock electrons, the prompt photons IC scattered by the early external reverse-fo...
